Elliot: (during dinner tonight, eating chicken, but with a disgusted look on his face): Did you know chicken is made out of a pig??
Ethan: (with disbelief, waits a beat, looks at me, then back at Elliot) No, actually, it's made out of a chicken.
Elliot: Oh. That makes sense.

In the car, musing about what would happen on American Idol tonight
Ethan: I think Archuletta will sing something really rockin, and Randy will say, "This just proves what I always say: If you can sing, you can sing anything."
Me: But he might say, "Y'know, that was just aiiight for me. Just not really your genre, so it was just ok."
Ethan: But he MIGHT say, "That was da bomb, y'all. That was da bomb."
I couldn't keep from laughing at this point.

After I drop off Elliot at the Montessori preschool, I then drive quite a bit to get Ethan to school in second grade. As you can see from the above post, we sometimes have deep conversations. Ethan's so great to talk to -- so articulate and refreshing. 7 going on 35. Today, we were talking about how Elliot still has tearful mornings when I drop him off at school.
Ethan: I think he just has butterflies in his stomach.
Me: Do you still get butterflies before you go to school?
Ethan: Almost everyday. I think, Boy I wish I didn't have to go to school today.
Me: But aren't you proud of yourself at the end of the day?
Ethan: (thinks a second) No, mostly I'm just hoping I don't have to go to school tomorrow.

Elliot (talking about his day on the way home): We have a terrarium in our classroom. We are waiting for baby beetles to hatch from their eggs.
Me: Wow, I don't think I even knew what a terrarium was until I was 18 years old.
A few minutes pass.
Elliot: You didn't go to a very good school when you were little, did you?

Yesterday after cleaning the car, I rearranged the car seat order in the backseat, Elliot was very upset about the switch.
Elliot: Why does everything in life have to change?
I'm no psychologist, but I don't think it had much to do with the car seats.

Last week, Ethan and I were talking about moving, and Ethan was very calm about the idea of saying goodbye to his friends, and having to go to a new school.
Me: What if you don't get into Maddie's school? (there's a wait list)
Ethan: That's ok. I'll go to another good school. I'm friendly. I'll make new friends.
Me: Yes, you are, and you will. (unwilling to let it go -- I just didn't think he was really thinking the whole thing through) And what if you do get into Maddie's school, but then don't get to be in her classroom?
Ethan: (shrugs his shoulders) Well, that's life, Mom.
